Petitioning State House and Senate (of the 34 states where it isn’t legal)
Support Marriage Equality
Petition by Valarie Davis
Supporters of equality are raising their glasses to Hawaii and Illinois - the latest states to make marriage equality law. Now, 16 states and the District of Columbia have legal same-sex marriage, which means that more than one in three Americans lives in a community where marriage equality is law.
And, things are changing fast: In the twenty years since Seinfeld first said, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that” we have seen support for same-sex marriage double. A Gallup poll in 1996 found 27% of Americans thought we should have marriage equality, this year that figure is 53%.
It is time for all our state legislatures to accept that love is not only blind, but gender neutral. Marriage equality is a right - the Supreme Court has ruled that the federal government must recognize same-sex marriage and even the United States military is officially on board.
Ultimately, no state wants to be the one that history shamed by being the last to do the right thing - equality in marriage, as in all things, is the promise of the American dream.
By signing this petition you will be telling your state legislature that marriage equality is the right thing to do.
State House and Senate (of the 34 states where it isn’t legal)
Marriage equality is a right recognized by the United States military and the Supreme Court of the United States. 16 states and the District of Columbia have already legislated in favor of marriage equality.
It is time that for our state to stop treating LGBT families as second class citizens and that we grant all loving couples the fundamental right to have their union recognized. I do not want our state to be shamed and embarrassed by being the last in the nation to recognize that love is both blind and gender neutral.
Therefore, I demand that you support marriage equality and make it law.
