Petitioning Food and Drug Administration
Mandate Labeling of GMO Foods
Petition by Valarie Davis
Did you know that around 70 percent of the processed foods on your local grocery store shelf contain genetically modified ingredients? GMOs [Genetically Modified Organisms] or, as they charmingly call them in Europe, ‘Frankenfoods’ are organisms that have been altered on a genetic level to be, for example, more resistant to disease or to yield a bigger crop.
In the US there are eight commercially available crops that are manufactured from GMO seeds: Soybeans, Cotton, Squash, Corn, Sugar Beets, Alfalfa and Papaya. So, what that means is that the the cereal you had for breakfast or soda you had with lunch is likely to have contained genetically modified ingredients.
The Japanese, Europeans and Australians all have mandatory labeling requirements for GMOs, but there are no such rules to ensure we Americans know what we are eating or feeding to our children.
Shouldn’t we have the right to know what we are putting in our bodies?

By signing this petition, you are asking the Food and Drug Administration to require appropriate labeling for all foods produced using GMOs
Food and Drug Administration
As the department charged with regulating food standards in the U.S. the FDA has a responsibility to the American people to ensure that we are informed about what we are putting into our bodies.
Americans should have the same rights as Europeans, Australians and the Japanese to make informed choices regarding what we consume or feed to our animals.
Therefore, I am demanding that the FDA require that all food products and animal feed that contains genetically modified ingredients be labeled clearly as containing GMOs.
