    Iraq Internet Cafe

Want to help the troops in Iraq and also our Texas Land Commissioner?

See the following letter from Jerry Patterson:

    2 May 2006

    RE: Iraq Internet Cafe

    Dear Friend:

During August 2005, along with other fellow Veterans of Foreign Wars Members, I visited our military personnel stationed in Iraq and Kuwait. Enough cannot be said about the dedication, esprit, and professionalism of the young men and women. They certainly “do us proud”.

Yet, one fact of life for these troops hasn’t changed since I was a Marine in Vietnam: letters from home are treasured and eagerly anticipated. Unlike thirty-five years ago, today’s letters are e-mails and they’re instantaneous. I’m sure you’ll agree that an e-mail from home is probably the greatest morale boost for our troops in Iraq -- other than maybe a cold beer. Unlike the beer, we can do something about the email.

This May we are returning to Iraq with the intention of dedicating a twenty-four station “Internet Café” in Taji. Our goal is to make the World Wide Web available via satellite link in outlying aresas of rural Iraq where that service is severely limited.

Some of the hardware and equipment for this project has already been donated. The remaining need is approximately $150,000 to fund the satellite receiver and equipment for two years.

The Department of Texas VFW Foundation, a 501(c)3 entity, will manage the collection and disbursement of the tax deductible contributions. Corporate contributors are welcome, and it is our goal to have $200,000 in hand no latter than May 15.

I am asking your financial support in this project. This is a personal priority of mine, ahead of re-election fundraising or any other work. I would sincerely appreciate your help.

Additional information pertaining to the 501(c)3, scope of work/technical issues and budget is available and can be readily provided. Checks should be made payable to the VFW Foundation and can be mailed to P.O. Box 40218 Austin, TX 78704.

These young men and women are serving in harm’s way in defense of liberty and our way of life. I am confident you will join me in enhancing their quality of life.

If you have any questions, please contact me at your convenience. Please feel free to contact me at jerry.patterson@glo.state.tx.us or at (512) 463-5256.

    Semper Fi,

JERRY PATTERSON Commissioner, General Land Office Chairman, Texas Veterans Land Board Lt. Colonel, United States Marine Corp. (ret.)
