The Analyst thinks that Fred Thompson could well get the GOP nomination. He is attractive and correct on the issues that the conservative right wing of the GOP say they are interested in. He has "star power" and has a good looking young wife who use to be a political consultant along with two young children. He says things that need to be said and that will be refreshing. Let's have a discussion on social security, medicare, defense spending, tax reform, etc. We need to hear about health care and how to pay for it.
But with his announcement the first week of September Thompson will start to get very close and personal research on his voting record, his lobbying, his past personal life and his past statements.
I don't buy the story that while he lobbied for a pro-choice group, he did not support their issue of keeping abortion legal. How can you lobby for a group if you do not support its efforts? I am sure that the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, who Thompson lobbied for had several discussions about their goals before they hired him. What did he do, go around the Capitol and urge legislators to keep abortion legal while at the same time winking at them to let them know that he was just saying what he was paid to say?
You just cannot be effective if you do not believe what you are telling folks about your client and their issues. Lobbying is not like an attorney defending a dope dealer who you know is guilty but who you are pledged to defend. Nope that is not the same. A lobbyist has to meet with the staff and the legislators and tell them why a certain piece of legislation is either good or bad. You have to truthful. You cannot fake it and still be effective. Thompson should just say he changed his position on abortion. That is what Mitt Romney is saying.
And during the time he was a U.S. Senator what did he do for entertainment. Who did he date when he was single and what lobbyist did he dine with or use the corporate aircraft? Beside the head guy in Haiti who else did he lobby for? I guess he will say, sure I lobbied for them, but I did not agree with their issues. That will be interesting.
