West with Wilson, 2006, #3 What a nice drive to Riudoso from Pecos. You start in dry desert with lots of oil wells and sagebrush and you end up in the high mountains with roaring streams and lush green trees. We liked Carlsbad NM and even that town where they from those aliens from outerspace. Roswell NM. The drive into Riudoso is very pretty and we took our time, even stopped and bought some blackberries. They even have casinos here in Riudoso which George of course visited one and lost my dog food money. We are staying with friends from the beach who own a mountain villa, or at least it looks like a resort to me. It is pitched high on a hillside with the drop off on one side of the house at least 40 feet. The house is surrounded by pine trees and down the hill is a small stream, which due to all the rain is now a roaring river. We went exploring the river yesterday and everyone got wet. But we had fun hiking through the woods but they do not need more rain here.. The folks we are staying with have a bird and two dogs so things are interesting here. I would like to get to know the bird better but so far he does not seem to be friendly. I also sampled some bacon grease from the stove and the lady of the house was not happy with me. They have bears here and so at night I have to go out on a leash. I did look for bears last night but did not see any. Perhaps tonight I will get lucky and see a big brown beer. Today we are going to see the sights around this nice town. They even have a horse race track here with a casino. George will of course try to win back my food money and tomorrow we leave for Phoenix and the visit with the newest member of the Strong family. Wilson Monday, August 21, 2006
