The Orlando terror attack that took place this weekend has stoked fear in the hearts of many Americans, especially those within the LGBTQ community. A single attacker was able to walk into a nightclub, open fire unto a crowd of unsuspecting partygoers, and commit the deadliest mass shooting in our country’s history – all without being subdued for over three hours. Understandably, those in the LGBTQ community are worried that they might be the target of future hate crimes of a similar nature, and Americans at large are concerned with the need to address radical Islam and gun control in the wake of this tragedy. And, despite Hillary Clinton and other politicians urging Americans to not be intimidated or worried about the threat that radical Islam poses to our country’s well-being, a GOP senator has warned that more attacks of this nature are on their way.
Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama spoke with Fox News on Sunday to address the violence that took place in Orlando the night before. The Republican expressed immense frustration with the Obama administration for their reluctance to address radical Islam head-on then proceeded to issue a dire warning. “More of these attacks are coming,” Sessions said confidently. “It’s a real part of the threat that we face, and if we can’t address it openly and directly, and say directly there is an extremist element within Islam that is dangerous and has to be confronted, we need to slow down.”
His conviction that more attacks are coming is slightly alarming, as politicians tend to take a more comfort-providing route in the wake of such a tragic event. It will be interesting to see if he now leads a group of lawmakers in creating legislation to prevent future attacks by extremists, and if so, what kind of legislation they create to do so.
