A significant aspect of Donald Trump’s appeal to Republican voters has been his willingness to combat terrorism with more fervor than the current Obama Administration. Often criticizing Obama’s team for being weak in its fight against radical Islam, Trump has promised that he would be stronger and smarter on the matter if elected into the Oval Office. Trump has acknowledged the need to take severe measures against terror organizations that wreak havoc on innocent civilians around the world, and yesterday, he made his most extreme proposal yet.
While speaking with Bill O’Reilly, Trump addressed the heinous terror attack in Nice, France. After a truck loaded with guns and explosives plowed through a Bastille Day celebration in the southern part of the country, nearly 80 people are dead, hundreds are injured, and millions are wondering why we have not yet been able to put a stop to the tragic violence being committed by radical Muslims. Trump said that the situation is absolutely dire and that he would be able to combat terrorist factions with a new American and Western hegemony.
O’Reilly said to Trump, “I believe it’s a world war now. We are in a world war scenario. It’s no longer just isolated ISIS attacks. Do you agree with that?”
“I certainly do. And I’ve been saying it for a long time, and it’s out of control,” replied the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
This is certainly not a statement to be taken lightly. It is one thing to say that we are at war with terrorists, and it’s another to say that we have entered the next World War. Adding to this, Trump told the conservative talk show host that he would go to Congress to ask for a Declaration of War against the Islamic State and radical Islam at large. The United States has not declared war since World War II, in 1942, and thus Trump’s proposal has sent shocks throughout the country and riled up his most hawkish support base.
Hillary Clinton will inevitably use Trump’s extreme statements about the current state of the situation and his plans to address it against him in her upcoming rallies and media campaigns.
